Lahore Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources and the Pakistani embassy or consulate before traveling, as visa policies and entry requirements are subject to change.
Lahore, the cultural capital of Pakistan, welcomes international visitors through Allama Iqbal International Airport (LHE), one of the country's major entry points. Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter Pakistan, with varying requirements based on nationality and purpose of visit. Pakistan has expanded its e-visa system in recent years, making the application process more accessible for tourists, business travelers, and those visiting friends and family. The immigration process at Lahore's airport is generally straightforward, though wait times can vary depending on flight arrival times and passenger volume. Travelers should ensure all documentation is complete and readily accessible, including valid passports with at least six months validity beyond the intended stay, appropriate visas, proof of accommodation, and return tickets. Pakistan has specific entry requirements and cultural considerations that travelers should familiarize themselves with before arrival. It's essential to note that visa policies and entry requirements can change, particularly in response to diplomatic relations, security situations, and public health concerns. All travelers should verify current requirements with the nearest Pakistani embassy or consulate and check their own government's travel advisories for Pakistan before finalizing travel plans.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Pakistan maintains a comprehensive visa system with most foreign nationals requiring advance authorization to enter the country. The government has implemented an online visa system (e-visa) for eligible nationalities, streamlining the application process for tourism, business, and family visits.

Visa-Free Entry
30-90 days depending on nationality

Very limited visa-free access to Pakistan

Includes
Maldives Nepal (90 days) Samoa Trinidad and Tobago Tuvalu Vanuatu

Visa-free access is extremely limited. Citizens of these countries should still verify current requirements before travel. All other nationalities require a visa.

Includes
China (for group tours only) Malaysia (business visa only) Turkey (business visa only) United Arab Emirates (business visa only)

Cost: Varies by nationality and visa type, typically USD 60-100

Visa on arrival is highly restricted and subject to conditions. Not recommended to rely on this option without prior confirmation from Pakistani authorities.

Electronic Travel Authorization (eVisa)
30 days to 1 year depending on visa type (tourist, business, or family visit)

Online visa application system available for eligible nationalities for tourism, business, and family visits

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand European Union countries (all 27 member states) Japan South Korea China Singapore Malaysia Thailand Saudi Arabia United Arab Emirates and approximately 175+ other countries

Applicants must upload passport copy, photograph, and supporting documents (hotel bookings, invitation letters, etc.). Payment made online via credit/debit card.
Cost: Tourist visa: USD 60-80; Business visa: USD 80-120; varies by nationality and duration

E-visa must be printed and presented at immigration. Ensure all information matches passport exactly. Some nationalities may require additional security clearance, extending processing time to 2-4 weeks.

Embassy/Consulate Visa Required
Varies from 30 days to multiple years depending on visa type

Traditional visa application through Pakistani embassy or consulate

How to Apply: Apply in person or by mail at the nearest Pakistani embassy or consulate. Required documents typically include: completed application form, passport-sized photographs, passport valid for at least 6 months, proof of accommodation, return flight tickets, bank statements, and invitation letter (if applicable). Processing time: 5-15 business days for standard applications.

Some nationalities require security clearance from Islamabad, which can take 4-8 weeks. Citizens of Afghanistan, Iraq, and certain other countries face additional scrutiny and longer processing times.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore, international passengers proceed through immigration control, baggage claim, and customs inspection. The process is generally efficient, though peak times can result in queues. Having all documents organized and readily available will expedite your entry.

1
Disembarkation and Health Screening
Exit the aircraft and follow signs to immigration. You may pass through health screening checkpoints where temperature checks or health declarations may be required, depending on current health protocols.
2
Immigration Control
Join the queue for 'Foreign Nationals' (separate from Pakistani citizens). Present your passport, visa (printed e-visa or visa sticker), completed arrival card (usually distributed on the flight), and any supporting documents. Immigration officers may ask questions about your visit.
3
Biometric Data Collection
Fingerprints and photographs are typically collected from foreign visitors as part of the immigration process. This is standard procedure and takes only a few moments.
4
Entry Stamp
Once approved, your passport will be stamped with entry date and permitted duration of stay. Verify the dates are correct before leaving the immigration counter.
5
Baggage Claim
Proceed to baggage claim area and collect your luggage. Trolleys are available. Check your bags for damage before leaving the area.
6
Customs Declaration and Inspection
Pass through customs control. Use the 'red channel' if you have goods to declare or 'green channel' if you have nothing to declare. Bags may be subject to X-ray screening or physical inspection.
7

Tips for Smooth Entry

Dress modestly and conservatively when arriving in Pakistan. This creates a positive first impression and respects local cultural norms.
Keep all documents in a easily accessible folder or travel wallet. Don't pack important documents in checked luggage.
Fill out your arrival card on the plane to save time at immigration. Use black or blue pen and write clearly.
Have your hotel address and phone number written down or saved on your phone. Immigration officers may ask for this information.
Be patient and polite with immigration officers. Answer questions directly and honestly. Avoid volunteering unnecessary information.
Download offline maps and have important phone numbers accessible before arrival, in case you don't have immediate internet access.
Exchange a small amount of currency at the airport for immediate expenses (taxi, tips), but get better rates at city exchange bureaus.
Register with your embassy upon arrival in Pakistan, especially for extended stays, so they can contact you in emergencies.
Take a photo of your passport details page and visa, and email it to yourself as a backup.
If you face any issues at immigration, remain calm and ask to speak with a supervisor. Contact your embassy if serious problems arise.

Health Requirements

Pakistan has specific health entry requirements, primarily focused on preventing the spread of infectious diseases. It's essential to check current health requirements before travel, as these can change based on global health situations.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is not mandatory for entry to Pakistan but is strongly recommended. Medical facilities in Lahore are adequate for basic care, but serious conditions may require medical evacuation. Ensure your travel insurance covers medical treatment, hospitalization, and emergency evacuation. Some hospitals may require upfront payment or proof of insurance before treatment. Keep insurance documents and emergency contact numbers accessible.

Current Health Requirements: Health entry requirements can change rapidly, especially regarding COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Check the following before travel: Pakistan's Ministry of Health website for current requirements, your departure country's health authority for recommended vaccinations, WHO (World Health Organization) travel health guidelines for Pakistan, and your travel insurance policy for health coverage details. Some countries require proof of polio vaccination when departing Pakistan - obtain documentation if you'll be traveling onward. Consider bringing a basic medical kit with prescription medications (with prescriptions), over-the-counter remedies, and first aid supplies.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport regardless of age. Minors (under 18) traveling without both parents should carry: notarized parental consent letter from absent parent(s) authorizing travel, including parent's contact information and passport details; birth certificate showing parents' names; and copies of parents' passport identification pages. For unaccompanied minors, airlines have specific requirements - contact your airline in advance. Adoption papers should be carried if the child is adopted. Children require the same visa as adults. Some airlines offer unaccompanied minor services for children traveling alone.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to Pakistan requires advance planning and documentation. Required documents: Official health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian in the country of origin (within 10 days of travel); Rabies vaccination certificate (vaccination must be at least 30 days old but not more than 12 months old); Import permit from the Department of Animal Quarantine, Ministry of Food Security & Research (apply well in advance); Microchip implantation recommended for identification. Airlines have specific requirements for pet travel - contact airline before booking. Pets may be subject to quarantine upon arrival depending on origin country and documentation. Pakistan has restrictions on certain dog breeds. Some countries are easier to import from than others. Consider hiring a pet relocation specialist for complex moves.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas are typically valid for 30-90 days. For longer stays: Visa Extension - Apply at the local FIA Immigration office before your current visa expires. Bring passport, current visa, proof of accommodation, financial means, and reason for extension. Extensions are granted at discretion of authorities. Apply at least one week before expiry. Long-term Visa Options - Business visa (for business activities, typically 3-12 months, multiple entry); Work visa (requires job offer and No Objection Certificate from employer); Student visa (requires admission to recognized institution); Residence visa (for those married to Pakistani nationals or with long-term business interests). Overstaying your visa results in fines, detention, deportation, and future entry bans. Always maintain legal status. For stays longer than 3 months, you may need to register with local police - check requirements with your hotel or host.

Business Travelers

Business visitors require a business visa, not a tourist visa. Requirements include: invitation letter from Pakistani company/organization on official letterhead, stating purpose and duration of visit; company registration documents from inviting organization; letter from your employer describing your position and purpose of travel; business visa application (online or through embassy). Business visas allow multiple entries and longer validity (up to 12 months). Business activities on tourist visa are prohibited. Bring business cards and company documentation. Some business travelers may need No Objection Certificate (NOC) for certain activities.

Journalists and Media Personnel

Journalists, photographers, and film crews require special journalist visas and must not enter on tourist visas. Apply through Pakistani embassy/consulate with: letter from media organization on official letterhead; detailed itinerary and purpose of visit; list of areas to be visited; equipment list. Journalist visas require approval from Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and security clearance, which can take several weeks. Working as journalist on tourist visa can result in arrest and deportation. No Objection Certificate (NOC) may be required for filming in certain areas. Drone use for filming requires special permits from Civil Aviation Authority.

Dual Nationals (Pakistani Origin)

Persons of Pakistani origin who hold foreign nationality must enter Pakistan on their Pakistani passport if they have not formally renounced Pakistani citizenship. Pakistan does not recognize dual nationality for entry purposes - you cannot enter on a foreign passport if you hold Pakistani citizenship. Those who have renounced Pakistani citizenship should carry proof of renunciation. Pakistani-origin foreign nationals may be eligible for Pakistan Origin Card (POC) which grants multiple-entry visa-free access. Apply for POC through Pakistani embassy if eligible (available to those who held Pakistani citizenship or whose parents/grandparents were Pakistani citizens).
